Understanding AGN-Host Connection in Partially Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei. Part I: The Nature of AGN+HII Composites
The goal of our serial papers is to examine the evolutionary connection
between AGN and star formation in its host galaxy in the partially obscured
AGNs (i.e., Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies). Taking advantage of these galaxies,
the properties of both components can be studied together by direct
measurements. In this paper, we focus on the broad-line composite galaxies
(composite AGNs) which are located between the theoretical and empirical
separation lines in the [NII]/Ha vs. [OIII]/Hb diagram. These galaxies are
searched for from the composite galaxies provided by the SDSS DR4 MPA/JHU
catalogs. After re-analyze the spectra, we perform a fine classification for
the 85 composite AGNs in terms of the BPT diagrams. All the objects located
below the three theoretical separation lines are associated with a young
stellar population (<1Gyrs), while either a young or old stellar population is
identified in the individual multiply-classified object. The
multiply-classified objects with a very old stellar population are located in
the LINER region in the [OI]/Ha vs. [OIII]/Hb diagram. We then consider the
connection between AGN and star formation to derive the key results. The
Eddington ratio inferred from the broad Ha emission, the age of the stellar
population of AGN's host as assessed by D_n(4000), and the line ratio [OI]/Ha
are found to be related with each other. These relations strongly support the
evolutionary scenario in which AGNs evolve from high L/L_Edd state with soft
spectrum to low L/L_Edd state with hard spectrum as young stellar population
ages and fades. The significant correlation between the line ratio [OI]/Ha and
D_n(4000) leads us to suggest that the line ratio could be used to trace the

Processes at the margins of supraglacial debris cover: quantifying dirty ice ablation and debris redistribution
Current glacier ablation models have difficulty simulating the high‐melt transition zone between clean and debris‐covered ice. In this zone, thin debris cover is thought to increase ablation compared to clean ice, but often this cover is patchy rather than continuous. There is a need to understand ablation and debris dynamics in this transition zone to improve the accuracy of ablation models and the predictions of future debris cover extent. To quantify the ablation of partially debris‐covered ice (or ‘dirty ice’), a high‐resolution, spatially continuous ablation map was created from repeat unmanned aerial systems surveys, corrected for glacier flow in a novel way using on‐glacier ablation stakes. Surprisingly, ablation is similar (range ~5 mm w.e. per day) across a wide range of percentage debris covers (~30–80%) due to the opposing effects of a positive correlation between percentage debris cover and clast size, countered by a negative correlation with albedo. Once debris cover becomes continuous, ablation is significantly reduced (by 61.6% compared to a partial debris cover), and there is some evidence that the cleanest ice (<~15% debris cover) has a lower ablation than dirty ice (by 3.7%). High‐resolution feature tracking of clast movement revealed a strong modal clast velocity where debris was continuous, indicating that debris moves by creep down moraine slopes, in turn promoting debris cover growth at the slope toe. However, not all slope margins gain debris due to the removal of clasts by supraglacial streams. Clast velocities in the dirty ice area were twice as fast as clasts within the continuously debris‐covered area, as clasts moved by sliding off their boulder tables. These new quantitative insights into the interplay between debris cover characteristics and ablation can be used to improve the treatment of dirty ice in ablation models, in turn improving estimates of glacial meltwater production
A Magellan-IMACS-IFU Search for Dynamical Drivers of Nuclear Activity. I. Reduction Pipeline and Galaxy Catalog
Using the Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS)
integral-field unit (IFU) on the 6.5m Magellan telescope, we have designed the
first statistically significant investigation of the two-dimensional
distribution and kinematics of ionized gas and stars in the central kiloparsec
regions of a well-matched sample of Seyfert and inactive control galaxies
selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The goals of the project are to use
the fine spatial sampling (0.2 arcsec/pixel) and large wavelength coverage
(4000-7000A) of the IMACS-IFU to search for dynamical triggers of nuclear
activity in the central region where active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity and
dynamical timescales become comparable, to identify and assess the impact of
AGN-driven outflows on the host galaxy and to provide a definitive sample of
local galaxy kinematics for comparison with future three-dimensional kinematic
studies of high-redshift systems. In this paper, we provide the first detailed
description of the procedure to reduce and calibrate data from the IMACS-IFU in
`long mode' to obtain two-dimensional maps of the distribution and kinematics
of ionized gas and stars. The sample selection criteria are presented,
observing strategy described and resulting maps of the sample galaxies
presented along with a description of the observed properties of each galaxy

PAciFy Cough – A multicentre, double blind, placebo controlled, crossover trial of morphine sulfate for the treatment of PulmonAry Fibrosis Cough
Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive disease that leads to lung scarring, Cough is reported by 85% of patients with IPF and can be a distressing symptom with a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. There are no proven effective therapies for IPF related cough. While morphine is frequently used as a palliative agent for breathlessness in IPF, its effects on cough have never been tested. PAciFy Cough is a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of morphine sulfate for the treatment of cough in IPF. Methods: We will recruit 44 subjects with IPF prospectively from three interstitial lung disease units in the UK, namely the Royal Brompton Hospital, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Patients will be randomized (1:1) to either placebo twice daily or morphine sulfate 5mg twice daily for 14 days. They will then crossover after a 7 day washout period. The primary endpoint is the percent change in daytime cough frequency (coughs per hour) from baseline as assessed by objective cough monitoring at Day 14 of treatment. Discussion: This multicentre, randomised trial will assess the effect of opioids on cough counts and cough associated quality of life in IPF subjects. If proven to be an effective intervention, it represents a readily available treatment for patients. Trial registration: The study was approved by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (Ref: CTA 21268/0224/001-0001 – EUDRACT 2019-003571-19 – Protocol Number RBH2019/001) on 08 April 2020, in compliance with the European Clinical Trials Directive and the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations 2004 and its subsequent amendments. Are galaxies with AGN a transition population?
We present the results of an analysis of a well-selected sample of galaxies
with active and inactive galactic nuclei from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, in
the range 0.01 < z < 0.16. The SDSS galaxy catalogue was split into two classes
of active galaxies, Type~2 AGN and composites, and one set of inactive,
star-forming/passive galaxies. For each active galaxy, two inactive control
galaxies were selected by matching redshift, absolute magnitude, inclination,
and radius. The sample of inactive galaxies naturally divides into a red and a
blue sequence, while the vast majority of AGN hosts occur along the red
sequence. In terms of H-alpha equivalent width, the population of composite
galaxies peaks in the valley between the two modes, suggesting a transition
population. However, this effect is not observed in other properties such as
colour-magnitude space, or colour-concentration plane. Active galaxies are seen
to be generally bulge-dominated systems, but with enhanced H-alpha emission
compared to inactive red-sequence galaxies. AGN and composites also occur in
less dense environments than inactive red-sequence galaxies, implying that the
fuelling of AGN is more restricted in high-density environments. These results
are therefore inconsistent with theories in which AGN host galaxies are a
`transition' population. We also introduce a systematic 3D spectroscopic
imaging survey, to quantify and compare the gaseous and stellar kinematics of a
well-selected, distance-limited sample of up to 20 nearby Seyfert galaxies, and
20 inactive control galaxies with well-matched optical properties. The survey
aims to search for dynamical triggers of nuclear activity and address

Studies specifically aimed at assessing tree survival are unusual and so data initially designed for other purposes often need to be used; such data are more likely to contain errors than data collected for this specific purpose
Water induced sediment levitation enhances downslope transport on Mars
On Mars, locally warm surface temperatures (~293 K) occur, leading to the possibility of (transient) liquid water on the surface. However, water exposed to the martian atmosphere will boil, and the sediment transport capacity of such unstable water is not well understood. Here, we present laboratory studies of a newly recognized transport mechanism: “levitation” of saturated sediment bodies on a cushion of vapor released by boiling. Sediment transport where this mechanism is active is about nine times greater than without this effect, reducing the amount of water required to transport comparable sediment volumes by nearly an order of magnitude. Our calculations show that the effect of levitation could persist up to ~48 times longer under reduced martian gravity. Sediment levitation must therefore be considered when evaluating the formation of recent and present-day martian mass wasting features, as much less water may be required to form such features than previously thought
Resettlement experiences and resilience in refugee youth in Perth, Western Australia
Background: In Australia, the two major pathways of refugee entry are the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees resettlement programme and irregular maritime arrivals (IMAs) seeking asylum. The Australian Government’s policies towards IMAs since July 2013 are controversial, uncompromising and consistently harsh, with asylum seekers held in detention centres for prolonged periods. Refugees and asylum seekers have distinct and unique stressors that make resettlement difficult. Methods: This exploratory study examines resettlement experiences for refugee youth in Western Australia using the psychosocial conceptual framework and qualitative methods. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews were undertaken with verbatim transcripts analysed using thematic analysis to identify themes. Results: Themes documented that language and its impact, and experience with education, health, and social activities, support structures provided to youth and supporting future aspirations as critical to successful resettlement. This exploratory study contributes to developing a broader understanding of the resettlement experiences of refugee youth, drawing on their current and past experiences, cultural differences and mechanisms for coping. Conclusion: Fluency in English language, especially spoken, was a facilitator of successful resettlement. Our results align with previous studies documenting that support programs are vital for successful resettlement. Although faced with immense difficulties refugee youth are resilient, want to succeed and have aspirations for the future. Strategies and recommendations suggested by refugee youth themselves could be used for developing interventions to assist successful resettlement
Regeneration niche differentiates functional strategies of desert woody plant species
Plant communities vary dramatically in the number and relative abundance of species that exhibit facilitative interactions, which contributes substantially to variation in community structure and dynamics. Predicting species’ responses to neighbors based on readily measurable functional traits would provide important insight into the factors that structure plant communities. We measured a suite of functional traits on seedlings of 20 species and mature plants of 54 species of shrubs from three arid biogeographic regions. We hypothesized that species with different regeneration niches—those that require nurse plants for establishment (beneficiaries) versus those that do not (colonizers)—are functionally different. Indeed, seedlings of beneficiary species had lower relative growth rates, larger seeds and final biomass, allocated biomass toward roots and height at a cost to leaf mass fraction, and constructed costly, dense leaf and root tissues relative to colonizers. Likewise at maturity, beneficiaries had larger overall size and denser leaves coupled with greater water use efficiency than colonizers. In contrast to current hypotheses that suggest beneficiaries are less “stress-tolerant” than colonizers, beneficiaries exhibited conservative functional strategies suited to persistently dry, low light conditions beneath canopies, whereas colonizers exhibited opportunistic strategies that may be advantageous in fluctuating, open microenvironments. In addition, the signature of the regeneration niche at maturity indicates that facilitation expands the range of functional diversity within plant communities at all ontogenetic stages. This study demonstrates the utility of specific functional traits for predicting species’ regeneration niches in hot deserts, and provides a framework for studying facilitation in other severe environments
